lotus
Guest Chair (2023)
lotus is a guest chair designed to bring-forth a translation of traditional Ming Dynasty chair design for a modern home environment. The design was inspired by a Ming Dynasty folding chair that was created to allow high-class generals to maintain a symbolic status through furniture during an outing.
This specific chair was made to allow high class generals and personnel to maintain their stature and status even while they are on-the-go. The movement created with the intersection of the arms for its purpose was extremely for me.

Design Development
Trying different methods of translating the movement of the folding chair to a wooden guest chair.
“出于泥而不染“ (out of mud but unstained)
The above Chinese idiom describes the growth of a lotus flower and is used to illustrate something or someone that is calm, clean, kind, simple, still, pure, and untouched by the harshness of its surroundings. This is a feeling I hope to convey with my design of this chair. The white accents not only playing to the structure and inspiration of the traditional chair but also symbolizing growth and simplicity. This name is also taken from a character of my late grandmother’s name, someone who I truly believe embodies these characteristics.
